Las Vegas-based Allegiant Air LLC announced plans Tuesday to begin non-stop jet service from Owensboro to Orlando on Feb. 18.

The airline will offer an introductory fare of $69 each way, John Fenyes, director of sales, told a morning news conference in the lobby of Owensboro-Daviess County Regional Airport.

Tickets can be purchased at that price until Dec. 3, he said. They must be used by April 30.

After that, Fenyes said, prices will rise to $89 each way.

Dr. Andrew Ward, a member of the airport board, said the arrival of Allegiant’s 150-seat jets in February will mark the first commercial jet service to the airport.

“It’s a momentous occasion,” said Airport Director George Smith.

Fenyes said the Owensboro-to-Orlando service will feature flights on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Flights will leave Owensboro at 9:20 a.m. on each of those days and arrive at Orlando Sanford International Airport at 12:20 p.m. Eastern time.

Flights leaving Orlando will depart at 7:35 a.m. Eastern time and arrive in Owensboro at 8:40 a.m., Fenyes said.

The flights take two hours.

“Even the drive to the Evansville airport is an hour,” Fenyes said. “We’ll have people in Orlando in two.”

The fact that the Owensboro airport has an 8,000 foot runway and little air traffic helped Allegiant choose Owensboro over other cities in the region.

Fenyes said 1.3 million people live within 75 miles of Owensboro — the area that Allegiant will be targeting with its advertising.

“It’s wonderful to finally have an airline,” said Karen Miller, executive director of the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau. “We hope people will come in and spend the night before their flights.”

The x-ray machines used to screen carry-on baggage at the passenger checkpoints should not damage film or equipment. However, the x-ray equipment used for screening checked baggage is more powerful and will damage your undeveloped film. You should remove all undeveloped film from your checked baggage and place it in your carry-on baggage.At the passenger security checkpoint, you should remove the following types of film from your carry-on baggage and ask for a hand inspection:

• Film with an ASA/ISO 800 or higher
• Highly sensitive X-ray or scientific films
• Film of any speed which is subjected to X-ray surveillance more than 5 times (the effect of X-ray screening is cumulative)
• Film that is or will be underexposed
• Film that you intend to “push process”
• Sheet film
• Large format film
• Medical film
• Scientific film
• Motion picture film
• Professional grade film

You may request a hand-inspection of any undeveloped film.

The X-ray machine at the passenger security checkpoint will not affect undeveloped film under ASA/ISO 800. However, multiple X-ray inspections (more than 5 times) of the same roll of undeveloped film may cause damage.

The machines used to screen your checked baggage or carry-on baggage will not affect digital camera images or film that has already been processed, slides, photo compact discs, or picture discs.

Other Precautions

• If you plan to request a hand inspection of your film, you should consider carrying your film in clear canisters, or taking the film out of solid colored canisters and putting it into clear plastic bags, to expedite the screening process.
• If you are going to be traveling through multiple X-ray examinations with the same rolls of undeveloped film, you may want to request a hand-inspection of your film. However, non-U.S. airports may not honor this request.
• If you plan to hand-carry undeveloped film on an airplane at an international airport, contact the airport security office at that airport to request a manual inspection.
• Consider having your exposed film processed locally before passing through airport security on your return trip.
• The TSA recommend that you do not place your film in lead-lined bags since the lead bag will have to be hand-inspected. If you have concerns about the impact of the X-ray machine on your undeveloped film, you can request a hand inspection.
• You may still consider bringing a lead-lined bag if you are traveling through airports in other countries as their policies may vary. Check with your airline or travel agent for more information on foreign airports.

There are a number of places which are recommended for meeting arriving passengers:

1. In the Express Pick-Up location underneath the main terminal
2. Under the Flight Information Display Boards in either the East Hall (Hotel Atrium) for gates 60-129, or the West Hall (Great Hall) for gates 1-59
3. By the fountain in the East Hall (Hotel Atrium), which is surrounded with benches
4. In the baggage claim area for the airline being flown.  Please check here to determine which baggage claim is used by each airline
5. On the Arrivals/Baggage Claim Curb (Level 2) outside baggage claim (please note that cars may not be stationary in this area unless actively loading/unloading passengers and/or baggage, therefore please allow at least 20 minutes after aircraft arrival time to allow for passengers to transfer to the main terminal, and exit the baggage claim area)
6. In one of the restaurants or bars in the Main Terminal
7. In McCoy’s Bar & Grill, Hemispheres Restaurant, or the lobby of the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport at the east end of the Main Terminal

Picking up passengers at the Arrivals/Baggage Claim Curb (Level 2) outside the main terminal is still permitted; however, vehicles may not be stationary in these locations unless actively loading/unloading passengers and/or baggage.  Therefore please use the FREE! Orlando International Airport has a chapel inside the main terminal, located just beyond the west security checkpoint (Gates 1-59), which can be accessed by any passenger holding a boarding pass. The chapel is open to all faiths, and Catholic mass is conducted every Sunday at 8:15am and 12:00pm.

Children under 18 years of age usually do not require photo ID for domestic flights; however, as each airline has its own requirements, please contact your airline directly to confirm its ID requirement for minors. According to the US Department of Agriculture, the majority of milk products originating from countries affected with Foot and Mouth Diseases are prohibited; however, Plant Protection and Quarantine has been instructed to provide some exceptions including “Milk and milk products intended for use by infants or very young children are enterable (into the U.S.) if in a reasonable or small quantity for several days’ use”.
